Very very often I've found that negatives later become positives. You may not realize it at the time, but I've experienced it again and again. When I went to AA with my b/f for 14 months I started to think about a Higher Power and thought perhaps he sees the big design, like one might see a pattern from a high point above the ground. Sometimes in retrospect--sometimes years later--you can look back and see how some negative things led to positive. The connections and the "narrative" finally unfold. Pretty awesome.
Oh yeah--forgot the most obvious example--for a writer, travails are often the stuff that stories are made of. Also it's often been said that most humor derives from pain. And suffering can lead to compassion for others.
